Bosch Shuts Israel AI Hub as War Decimates Regime's Tech Sector

German multinational Bosch is shutting down its artificial intelligence office in Israel, a move the company has justified on economic grounds. The decision marks the first withdrawal of a major German firm from the Israeli research ecosystem and the first closure of a Bosch foreign center since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hawzah News Agency- A company spokesperson confirmed the decision was taken in December, with staff informed in January. The spokesperson stressed that the move was driven by economic reasons.

Bosch launched its research activities in Israel in 2018, operating its "Bosch Center for Artificial Intelligence" in Tel Aviv and Haifa.

The offices engaged in AI, sensors, and automation are now being wound down, with the closure process expected to be completed by the end of June.

Bosch will, however, maintain its commercial presence in Israel through its subsidiaries, including BSH, Elmo Motion Control, and Bosch Ventures.

'Atmosphere of War Has Shaken Operational Stability'

Andrea Frahm, head of the Tel Aviv office of Germany's Helmholtz Association of research centers, pointed to the impact of the war on foreign companies operating in Israel.

She said that since October 7, 2023, German specialists have shown little interest in relocating and working in Israel, with families with children adopting a similar stance.

According to Frahm, the wartime atmosphere gripping the region has severely undermined operational stability.

She stressed that without a clear outlook and certainty regarding future conditions; German companies will be reluctant to open new offices in the region.

Analysts also believe Israel's innovation ecosystem has reached a critical tipping point. They say that amid global crises and the ongoing war, technology investments in Israel have plunged to their lowest level since 2018.
